1936 50C York MS68 PCGS. Who was Walter H. Rich? His only design credit was the York half, and Q. David Bowers (1991) could describe him only as "a Portland, Maine artist known in particular for his drawings of wildlife and nature." Further research through Project Gutenberg turns up a Walter H. Rich in the employ of the United States Department of Commerce, Bureau of Fisheries, as the author of the fiscal year 1929 monograph "Fishing Grounds of the Gulf of Maine," a treatise on the seafood sources of New England and nearby Canada. Between the name, identical to the middle initial; the timeframe, with only seven years between the monograph and the artwork; and the placement of civil servant Rich in a job that brought him into regular contact with the outdoors, one can make a strong case that the writer and the artist are one and the same.
Hazy golden patina covers much of the obverse of this wonderfully well-preserved representative, while the reverse is mostly brilliant. Any attempt to find a single offensive mark is futile. NGC has certified no numerically finer examples, and this piece is tied for the finest graded by PCGS (4/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
