1936 50C York MS64 Uncertified. This lightly toned pie
1936<50C> York MS64 Uncertified. This lightly toned piece has underlying mint brilliance with the appearance of prooflike fields. It accompanies a large framed historical map of "Olde York County Maine" with each of the individual communities and events of local significance. These maps accompanied the first 100 examples of this issue that were distributed, likely to persons closely associated with the commemorative coins, including those who assisted Walter P. Nichols with the issue, or certain of his other friends.
It cannot be stated with certainty that the actual coin offered here is one of the first 100, for the integrity of the backing has been compromised. The paper backing and underlying corrugated cardboard has been carefully cut, and the accompanying coin placed in a "cointain" or similar plastic holder. While we have no reason to believe otherwise, we are unable to guarantee that the coin is actually one of the first 100 pieces.
Describing this lot is a special treat for this cataloger, who used to live not far from York County, Maine, and who has personally visited or traveled through nearly every community depicted. It is interesting to ponder some of the individual scenes. As one example, Sanford, Maine was the home of late 19th century numismatist S. Benton Emory, while "Emery's Tavern" is illustrated on the map. For the commemorative specialist, or the collector with a wider range of interest, this is a fascinating and highly desirable piece of numismatic history.
