1936 50C PR67 NGC. Though Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design is an acknowledged classic, a combination of events restricted its appearance in proof format to just seven issues. The failure of matte proofs to resonate with collectors led to the collapse of the Mint's proof program in 1916, and the Walker design did not appear in proof that year. In 1936, the production of proofs continued, and the program only gained in popularity until 1942, when World War II stalled the production of such luxury pieces. By the time Philadelphia issued proof sets again in 1950, the Walking Liberty design was three years in the past.
The proof half dollar issue of 1936 is characterized by an exceedingly low mintage of just 3,901 specimens, and the piece offered here is among the finest survivors. Crisply struck and carefully preserved devices emerge from cloud-gray fields with golden patina at the margins. NGC has graded no numerically finer examples, while PCGS has certified just one (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Adolph A.
