1936 50C Norfolk MS68 PCGS. The purpose of this commemorative issue was to provide funds for the celebration of Norfolk's anniversary of its growth from a township in 1682 to a royal borough in 1736. These half dollars commemorate the 300th anniversary of the original Norfolk land grant, and the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the borough. The obverse shows the Seal of the City of Norfolk with a three-masted ship as the central device, which is well suited to this naval city. The scallop shells at the lower obverse border continue the maritime theme. The reverse central device is the Royal Mace of Norfolk, presented to the Borough of Norfolk by Lt. Governor Robert Dinwiddie in 1753.
The MS68 example offered here has light silver-gray color in the centers accented by delicate rainbow-colored peripheries. The intricate designs are boldly struck, and the lustrous surfaces are marvelously preserved. This beautiful specimen will provide an excellent addition to a high-end Uncirculated commemorative collection.
