1936 50C Elgin MS68 NGC. Like Gutzon Borglum before him, Trygve Rovelstad sculpted both the monument (in this case, the Pioneer Memorial) and the models for the commemorative half intended to finance its construction. Coincidentally, both Borglum's Stone Mountain and Rovelstad's Pioneer Memorial experienced long delays; 45 years passed between the Stone Mountain half and that project's eventual dedication, and the Pioneer Memorial did not become a reality until 2001, 65 years after its half was coined.
Gorgeous orange-russet patina graces the margins of this carefully preserved coin, while the centers are silver-gray. Both sides display pleasing luster that is slightly more satiny than this issue's famed frosty texture. The surfaces are pristine, with only the most infinitesimal marks visible to the unaided eye. NGC has graded just five pieces as MS68 or MS68 S, with none numerically finer in the Census or in PCGS's Population Report (3/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
