1936 50C Cleveland MS67 PCGS. The obverse of this
1936 50C Cleveland MS67 PCGS. The obverse of this commemorative depicts a bust of General Moses Cleveland (1754-1806), a surveyor who laid out the city named after him. The reverse illustrates an interesting pattern of nine stars marking nine principal cities (Duluth, Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Toronto, Buffalo, and Rochester) on the Great Lakes, along with a compass that symbolizes Cleveland as a center of industry for the region.
A total of 50,030 Cleveland half dollars were minted, including 30 assay pieces. The coins were initially sold at the Great Lakes Exposition (June 27 to October 4, 1936) on the Cleveland lakefront by the Cleveland Centennial Commemorative Coin Association. Many of these were mishandled by the public, with most survivors in XF to lower Uncirculated grades, and often exhibiting impairments. PCGS and NGC combined report only 63 specimens at the Superb Gem grade level of the example we offer here, with a mere four pieces grading higher (1/05).
The surfaces of the present coin are remarkably well preserved and fully lustrous. The obverse is dominated by light violet patination, and accented with splashes of variegated lime-green, golden-brown, and magenta-crimson at the periphery. The reverse is an even violet-gray with splashes of light green. Population: 34 in 67, 1 finer (1/05).
From the Bruce Scher #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Set. Lot:4150
