1936 50C Bridgeport MS67 PCGS. The occasion for this commemorative was the centennial of the incorporation of the city of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The obverse motif depicts P. T. Barnum, the city's most famous citizen, while the reverse displays an ultramodern eagle. A total of 25,000 pieces (plus another 15 assay coins) were minted. Today, Bridgeport half dollars are readily available on the market in lower Mint State levels such as MS60 to MS63. Higher grades become much more elusive, as evidenced by the combined PCGS and NGC Population Reports that indicate only 58 specimens certified by both services at the MS67 grade level, and none higher (!/05).
The Superb Gem in this lot features exquisitely struck design elements, and bright, lustrous surfaces overlain by a very thin veneer of champagne patina. Perhaps most noteworthy is the nearly complete lack of noticeable marks on the wide-open, exposed motifs and fields. This in conjunction with the previously-mentioned attributes generates outstanding overall eye appeal that will not pass unnoticed by commemorative specialists. Population: 47 in 67, 0 finer (1/05).
From the Bruce Scher #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Set. Lot:4147
