1936<1C> Type One--Satin Finish--PR65 Red PCGS. The cents and nickels in the early 1936 proof sets featured a Satin Finish, "sort of a hybrid between the older Matte (textured) Proof surface and the later Brilliant (mirrored) Proof surface," according to the Gale-Guth United States Proof Sets and Mint Sets (1936-2002). Once the collecting public realized that the Satin Finish coins were difficult to distinguish from the business strike coinage, few bothered to order examples. When the Mint changed to a brilliant finish later in the year, either the change was poorly publicized or collectors already had the proof coins they wanted. The Satin Finish proof coins are considerably rarer than their brilliant proof siblings. This example boasts reddish-yellow surfaces with glints of gold and magenta. There are no mentionable distractions. Certified in a green label holder.
