1935-S 50C San Diego MS68 PCGS. The San Diego Worl
1935-S 50C San Diego MS68 PCGS. The San Diego World's Fair was officially known as the California-Pacific International Exposition. Earlier commemorative issues relative to the Golden State included the California Diamond Jubilee, which today we call the California half dollar, and the Panama-Pacific Exposition half dollar. With both California and Panama-Pacific spoken for, this half dollar variety came to be known for the issuing locality of San Diego. A total of 250,000 half dollars were authorized for this issue. All 250,000 were minted in 1935, along with a few assay coins, but 180,000 of those were later melted as they had not been sold. Additional legislation allowed the production of 180,000 coins in 1936, and again, the entire quantity was struck. Like those of 1935, most of the 1936 issue remained unsold, and 150,000 were later melted. Thus we have a total production of 430,000 coins, a destruction of 330,000, leaving a net mintage of 70,000 in 1935 and 30,000 in 1936.
This example has brilliant and frosty silver luster with pale ivory coloration, accented by deep russet and gold along the borders.
