1935 Arky Vaughan Game Used Bat Signed by Pittsburgh Pirates Team. Exceedingly scarce signature model Hillerich & Bradsby dates to the most productive offensive season in the career of this Hall of Fame shortstop, one in which he posted National League-leading numbers in batting average (.385), slugging percentage (.607), and runs created (147). While the details of the Hillerich & Bradsby center trademark date the model to the 1934 or 1937 labeling period, the thrilling addition of eight bold black ink signatures (average 8+/10) allow us to peg the bat's use to the 1935 season. Joining the autograph of Arky himself are both Paul and Lloyd Waner, Jensen, Blanton, Grace, Herman and Suhr. As Babe Herman's service to the Pirates franchise was limited to just twenty-six games of the 1935 season, the evidence linking this bat to the 1935 campaign is airtight. The bat shows evidence of outstanding use, with an area of punished wood presenting ball marks and grain separation just below Vaughan's facsimile signature in accordance with his left-handed swing. A cracked handle ended the bat's long service to the Buccaneer cause. A small amount of paint upon the bat's surface must be noted in the interest of full disclosure, though this is of no real concern. Length and weight are thirty-five inches and thirty-four and a half ounces respectively. The bat comes to us directly from Vaughan's cousin, who was just two years old when Arky tragically lost his life at age forty in a fishing boat accident. She still lives in the state that gave Floyd his distinctive nickname, and supplies a letter of provenance to accompany this marvelous offering. It has been reported that fewer than ten Vaughan game used bats are known to the hobby, and surely this must be the only autographed example. An elite piece as worthy of a place in Cooperstown as Arky himself. Graded GU8. LOA from Taube & Malta. LOA from PSA/DNA (autographs).
