1935 50C Spanish Trail MS67 PCGS. Ex: W.P.E. Collection. Among the more absurd commemorative designs--a visual pun on "Cabeza de Vaca," or "cow's head" in Spanish--and one savaged by art critic Cornelius Vermeule in his classic Numismatic Art in America as "the ugliest commemorative coin ever produced by a United States mint. It may be the strongest contestant for the title of least attractive American coin ever manufactured under official auspices between 1793 and the present." On a more positive note, the Spanish Trail is also among the most desirable commemorative half dollars, art criticism aside. This piece offers frosty silver-gray surfaces ringed with gold and a noteworthy lack of mentionable impairments. Population: 82 in 67, 2 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
