1935/34-D<50C> Boone MS68 PCGS. The second year's coinage of the Daniel Boone Bicentennial brought about the addition of the commemorative date 1934 above the words PIONEER YEAR. This resulted from the Boone Bicentennial Commission's fear that the public might become confused as to the actual year of the bicentennial. They therefore sought authority from Congress to add the 1934 date on all coins to be made subsequently. This became law on August 26, 1935. The immediate consequence was the creation of a pair of rarities, as the Denver and San Francisco branch mints delivered 2,000 apiece with the extra date. These were snapped up at once, becoming promptly known as the "rare Boones," and speculators pushed the price up rapidly. This example has a pleasing melange of gold, pale blue, and violet toning over lustrous surfaces. The design elements are sharply defined throughout. No marks of any consequence are apparent over the pristine surfaces. Population: 5 in 68, 0 finer (11/05).
