1934-S $1 MS63 NGC. Prooflike. Here is a coin that has a lot going for it on several fronts. As an issue, the 1934-S is a key to the series and is so well known as such that it hardly needs to be mentioned. What is most unusual about this particular coin, though, is not its absolute rarity, but rather its rarity as a prooflike coin. As a rule, Peace dollars were not produced with prooflike fields. Only a few issues are known with any degree of reflectivity, the best known being the 1926-S, which is occasionally found with heavily striated semi-prooflike and prooflike fields. The 1934-S is not one of the obvious choices for a "prooflike" Peace dollar. (We should insert at this point that we are the ones calling this coin Prooflike--it is not labeled as such on the NGC insert). The 1934-S is generally located with bright, lustrous, satiny surfaces. The fields on this piece go a step beyond the usual bright and satiny appearance, and show what would be considered in the Morgan series semi-prooflikeness, which were created by light die polishing. It is sheer speculation why this coin has extra brightness in the fields, or more to the point why the fields were polished. Perhaps it was to eliminate die clashing or some other mint-made imperfection. Whatever the reason, the result was a more attractive coin. The coin also displays full striking details on each side and brilliant surfaces. Both obverse and reverse are minimally abraded for an MS63 coin, and the overall eye appeal is far greater than the stated grade.

Coin Engraver: Anthony de Francisci

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
