1934 Rose Bowl Trophy
1934 Rose Bowl Trophy. The final Rose Bowl appearance by an Ivy League school on this 1934 New Year's Day was likewise the last time the Ivy League posted a Rose Bowl victory, with Columbia topping Stanford seven to nothing in what was considered one of the greatest gridiron upsets to that time. Though the Light Blue had recorded an impressive seven and one record for the season, the Stanford Indians had allowed just four scores during all the course of their campaign, and were heavily favored to take the victory. Upon the muddy Pasadena battlefield, however, the Columbia side was able to completely shut down the Stanford offense, and executed a trick play in the second quarter to post the deciding, single touchdown.

Recalling that momentous occasion is this marvelous art deco prize, consigned to Heritage by the grandson of the Secretary/Treasurer of the Tournament of Roses Association that year. With top notch aesthetics to match its historical appeal, the ten-inch tall trophy rests upon a polished wooden base fronted by an engraved decorative plaque which reads, "Rose Bowl, Stanford, Columbia, 1934." As our eyes travel upward, we encounter double football goal posts, which frame at front a map of the United States and a second engraved plaque reading, "Pasadena Tournament of Roses, East - West, Intercollegiate Rose Bowl Award." A figural football serves as the trophy's spire. A degree of oxidation is to be noted upon the brass fixtures, and an imperceptible degree of restoration has improved the look of the front goalpost, but otherwise the award appears to have suffered very little over its seventy-four years of life. Certainly one of the finest prewar collegiate football trophies to enter the hobby, and, to the best of our knowledge, the first of Rose Bowl pedigree ever to be offered publicly.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Larg (view shipping information)
