1934 Baer vs. Carnera Championship Fight Poster
1934 Baer vs. Carnera Championship Fight Film Poster. Visually arresting poster advertises the film version of this historic bout, which pitted the murderous Max Baer (he had killed Brooklyn Dodgers star Dolph Camilli's brother in a 1930 match) against the Italian giant and Heavyweight Champ Primo Carnera. Unbeknownst to Carnera, he had been elevated to the World Championship by the mafia through dives and payoffs rather than through his own skill, and he was left to play Goliath to Baer's David, sent to the canvas ten times before the referee mercifully stopped the massacre. The duotone poster for the film recounting Baer's assumption of the crown is printed on light paper similar to newspaper stock, and measures an impressive 14.5x38" in size. A degree of wear is evident in various folds and creasing, and a couple of moderate tears, but a linen-backing would surely make the poster shine like a new penny. Given the age and highly delicate nature of the piece, one would have to assume that this is the only surviving example.
