When American GI'S first hit the beaches of North Africa in 1942, they brought with them specially printed U.S. silver certificates. The 1935 Series $1 "Yellow Seal" Silver Certificates were one ofthree silver certificate denominations issued in Europe during World War II for use by American GIs. Originally issued in 1942 during Operation Torch in North Africa, these notes went on to serve America's fighting forces when the Alliesinvaded Italy in 1943. The notes were issued in $1, $5 and $10 denominations, each printed with a distinctive "Yellow Seal" instead of the customary Blue Seal normally used. The reason for this was to guarantee that if large numbers of these notefell into enemy hands, the Americans could deem them "invalid." These notes stayed in use throughout Italy up to September 1, 1945, by which time the war in Europe was over and the fighting in the Pacific Theater was all but finished. At
