1934, $10,000 Federal Reserve Note FR2231-G ChUnc63
A spectacular key denomination for any collector to ponder owning, we are pleased to offer this choice $10,000 1934 Chicago district example. Our consignor was justly proud of this exemplary note, which he considered the centerpiece to his collection of high denomination notes. It's certain its next owner will feel the same pride as he looks at this wonderful note.

The centering is more than adequate and the note has considerable claim to a higher grade despite a small repaired pinhole. It also comes from the Chicago district, which, contrary what one might assume, is among the scarcer districts in this denomination. Expect this colorful example of this much in demand type to see bidding likely exceed our estimate.

Although outlawed by the Constitution, our nation’s first paper money was issued during the financial emergency of the Civil War. In the more than 140 years since, currency notes ranging from $1 to $10,000 have been printed for public use. That makes the $10,000 note -- equal in face value to 10 1,000-coin bags of Morgan silver dollars or 500 $20 gold coins -- the highest denomination ever printed for public use in the United States. (A $100,000 bill was printed exclusively for use within the Federal Reserve System.)

The $10,000 denomination has another distinction: it was never issued for everyday circulation. It was created by the government so banks and financial clearinghouses could settle large cash transactions. For many years now, it has been Treasury Department policy not to print any denomination above $100. The Treasury also destroys all notes it receives with face values above $100.

$10,000 bills were issued between 1863 and 1934. Treasury records acknowledge a maximum of 340 $10,000 bills remain outstanding. Official Treasury records indicate that 11,520 Series 1934 $10,000 bills were printed for the New York Federal Reserve, with an unknown number actually delivered.
The Endangered Species Collection
