1932 Washington Bicentennial Commission Presentation Medal. Baker-901. This very scarce medal was presented to official guests at a Commission function. This piece has been engraved to "Hon. William R. Wood / Rep. from Indiana / 72nd Congress /Presented by the" (and below that is stamped "United States / George Washington / Bicentennial / Commission"). Congressman Wood was born in Oxford, Benton County, Indiana, on January 5, 1861, and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1882. He was a U.S. congressman from 1915 to 1933 from Indiana, and he died on March 7, 1933, while on a visit to New York. Even though this piece is missing the top half (ribbon and bar), it is still one of the scarcest of the Washington Bicentennial pieces due to the personal engraving and presentation. An example sold in 1991 for $165.
