Powerful pair of black and white woodblock prints depicting Indian women at domestic activities. Artist signed, dated and numbered.<P>
Bought in Cape Town, South Africa, where there is a large Indian community, but may originate in India. <P>
Horizontal print is 6 3/4 inches wide by 5 inches high. Vertical print is 4 1/4 X 6 1/2 inches. Both are well framed and matted and ready to be hung. <P>
Both prints give us an interesting glimpse into the daily routines and domestic life of Indian women. In one scene, a group of 3 women sit in a circle on the ground, various kitchen utensils and possibly a piano / keyboard on one side. We see simplified screens and doors, that give the impression of enclosing the women in a protected area. The other print depicts a women more clearly busy with her cooking chores. A small boy stands near her. She is sitting in an enclosed garden. In both scenes, the women are beautifully portrayed, wearing saris, lots of bangles on arms, feet and toes and big hooped earrings and some are loosely veiled.
The drawing is very strong, which complements the strength of the colour. Fascinating detail. With black frames, they look quite stunning when hung. <P>
Each print is pencil signed, dated and numbered. The artist's name appears to be Rani Dey (possibly Raui Dey). Dated 1932. Both are numbered 62/125. <P>
Condition is very good. No damage to prints or frames.
