1932-D Washington Quarter Dollar PCGS MS64
Beautiful medium-deep patina over both sides. Following the precedent of the Lincoln cent (first issued in 1909 to commemorate the centennial of the martyred President's birth), the Treasury proposed in early 1931 that the half dollars to be issued in 1932 should honor Washington's birth bicentennial by portraying him. Accordingly, the Treasury and the Washington Bicentennial Commission co-sponsored another design competition, with cooperation of the federal Commission of Fine Arts. Terms of the contest specified that the Washington portrait on the obverse should be based on Houdon's bust (1785) preserved at Mount Vernon. Congress changed matters by deciding that not the half dollar but the quarter should be so honored (Act of March 4, 1931); a Washington half dollar had to wait another 50 years. The man chosen to design the coin was James Flanagan, whose JF initials can be found at the truncation of the bust. This impressive Denver Mint rarity from the first year should entice buyers from around the country to our sale. Expect, therefore, a fair level of interest and competition for it. (#5791)
