1932-D 25C MS65 PCGS
1932-D 25C MS65 PCGS. Study of the evolution of the Washington quarter demonstrates how coin designs are seldom (ever?) a straight line from concept to finished product. The Washington design was originally intended for the half dollar. Congress intervened and changed it to a quarter. The winning design was to be chosen from entrants submitted to the Commission of Fine Arts. Instead, Treasury Secretary Andrew W. Mellon chose the design he wanted. At least the coin was issued on the bicentennial of Washington's birth, and the design is based on the Houdon bust of the first president.
The low-mintage 1932-D is rarely offered in Gem condition. This is a lovely, lustrous example that has speckled iridescent toning over the obverse. The reverse is mostly brilliant in the center with the same iridescence around the margin. An outstanding '32-D quarter. Population: 63 in 65, 1 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: John Flanagan

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
