1932 $20 MS66 PCGS. Once regarded as the rarest of the late date issues in the Saint-Gaudens Double.
1932 $20 MS66 PCGS. Once regarded as the rarest of the late date issues in the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series (after, of course, the final-year 1933), the 1932 is now regarded as being more easy to obtain than the 1930-S, 1931, and 1931-D. Nonetheless, the '32 is anything but common when viewed in the wider context of either the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series or U.S. numismatics. Even though a respectable total of 1.1 million coins were produced, precious few coins left the Mint before the Presidential order of March 6, 1933 prohibited banks from paying out gold coins or gold certificates. Almost a month later, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued another Presidential order that not only recalled all gold coins in private hands, but resulted in the destruction of these coins by the federal government. The majority of the original mintage of the 1932 Double Eagle was certainly destroyed at this time. Over the years, no hoards emerged from either European or Latin American sources. The best estimate on the number of survivors in today's hobby is just 50-60 pieces. These coins are Mint State, indicating that virtually all of them must have been obtained directly from the Mint at the time of issue. We only have records for the sale at auction of one other 1932 Double Eagle certified MS66, and that coin is Ex: The Chicago Sale (Superior, 8/91), lot 875. Although also certified by PCGS, this is a different coin, and it is identifiable by a very light, almost imperceptible planchet streak (as struck) on the obverse over the left side of the rock upon which Liberty's right (facing) foot rests. This is a simply gorgeous Gem with thick, rich, frosty mint luster and a fresh look to both sides. Warm golden-rose and green-gold shades blend together over sharply defined and virtually distraction-free features. A no-questions Gem, and a premium quality one at that, this coin possesses eye appeal that would do justice to an even higher grade. NGC and PCGS combined report only eight coins in MS66, and there are none finer (7/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
