1931. Heated correspondence between Senator JJ O'Farrell and Chief Justice Hugh Kennedy, moderated by Lord Glenavy, Chairman of the Senate
typescript and manuscript. pp19.
25 by 21cm., 10 by 8.25in.

Acrimonious exchange of letters between H.K. and Labour Senator, J.J. O’Farrell. [Held back by Kennedy to remain in his personal family papers]. Three letters from the Chairman of the Senate (Lord Glenavy) try to pour cold water on the heated issue. Glenavy (in a letter written off the record) urgues that Kennedy should drop the issue. Glenavy (James Campbell) was Kennedy’s predecessor as Solicitor General in Ireland and Lord Chancellor under earlier colonial rule. He became a friend of the Free State Government (and of Kennedy) and died in 1931. These exchanges show how Glenavy in the early years of the State acted as a conciliatory influence on political rivals
