1931-D<$20> MS66 PCGS. Ex: Price. As we intimated previously, the 1931-D is one of the most elusive and coveted dates of this popular series. Only around 130 Mint State pieces have been certified by PCGS and NGC combined, and most of these are in the MS62 to MS64 range. Fewer than 20 pieces grade Full Gem, and only two coins are graded MS66, with none finer (9/05).
The Premium Gem offered in this lot displays light orange and yellow-gold coloration with subtle greenish-gold accents. As we pointed out in the introductory section of the '31-D, it is one of the better produced issues in the Saint-Gaudens series, exhibiting sharp definition on the design elements. The current specimen is no exception, as the Capitol building, stars, olive branch, leaves near the rock, and the eagle's feathers are all well delineated. Both sides radiate dazzling luster, and the surfaces on each are well preserved. A small field abrasion midway between the TY in LIBERTY and the eagle's arm serves to pedigree this coin. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (9/05).
From The Phillip H. Morse Collection of Saint-Gaudens Coinage.

Important
