1931-D $20 MS64 PCGS. The six rare issues that complet
1931-D $20 MS64 PCGS. The six rare issues that complete the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series are always in demand. The most plentiful of these pieces is the 1929, and the rarest is the 1933 issue. The other four can be ranked from least to most rare as: 1931-D, 1931, 1932, and 1930-S. In other words, this 1931-D is the second most often encountered of the rarities after 1929. In 1931, the country was in the middle of a depression, and few coins were needed. In addition to the double eagles of this date coined in Philadelphia and Denver, and the nickel coined in San Francisco, all three mints produced cents and dimes.
Nearly 3 million coins were produced in Philadelphia, while only 106,500 Denver Mint coins were struck, and yet the Denver issue is more plentiful of the two. Time was, not that long ago, that the Denver Mint pieces were considered extreme rarities, although a small hoard of 15 to 20 pieces was discovered in the 1980s, increasing the total known population by about 25%. Today, it is believed that 100 to 150 pieces exist, virtually all in Mint State grades.
This example, a highly appealing Choice Mint State piece, has frosty yellow-gold luster with rich pinkish-orange accents. The surfaces have a few of the usual abrasions that are found on these large gold coins, but the overall quality is easily consistent with the MS64 grade. Population: 36 in 64, 18 finer (12/06).
From The Matt & Susan Brown Family Collection of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
