1931-D<$20> MS63 NGC. Satiny and nicely frosted with attractive golden-orange color. The obverse of the coin, taken on its own merits, appears to approach Gem status, but a series of choppy abrasions on the eagle have kept the grade at least a point lower. Overall we would have to say that any collector seeking a Select representative of this scarce D-mint issue would be thrilled with this appealing example and should be prepared to stretch a little to secure its acquisition.
The Denver Mint produced just 106,500 Double Eagles in 1931, the vast majority of which were not released into circulation. Rather, nearly all of the original mintage was retained in federal vaults and then melted in the aftermath of President Roosevelt's Gold Recall Act of April 5, 1933. Gold specialists once considered the 1931-D to be equally as rare as the 1930-S. A small hoard of 15-20 coins, however, surfaced in the Midwest in 1984, and a few others have trickled back from European sources during the past 30 years. This issue is now similar in rarity to the 1931 and 1932, but perhaps receives slightly more attention due to its much lower mintage.
