1931-D $20 MS61 PCGS. This is another issue at the end of the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series that, when offered at all, is apt to grade Mint State. Precious few of the 106,500 pieces produced escaped destruction in the Mint. Exactly how many we do not know, but this issue is roughly equal in overall rarity to the 1931 and 1932. The originality of the present example is undeniable. Green-gold and orange-gold tinting gravitates toward the borders and leaves the centers to golden-rose shadings. While Akers (1988) opines that the '31-D is the least attractive Double Eagle produced during the 1929-1932 era, the luster on this coin belies that assessment. Both sides are richly frosted with splendid vibrancy. There are not all that many abrasions for the assigned grade, but a sizeable scrape over Liberty's midsection is noted. From the Aaron Bliss Collection.
