1931<$20> MS66 PCGS. The second 1931 double eagle that we offer from the Phillip Morse Collection, a Premium Gem example, very closely approaches the finest known specimen described in the previous lot. This MS66 coin displays magnificent variegated peach and yellow-gold patination imbued with subtle hints of mint green. Both sides radiate exceptionally attractive luster, and the design features are sharply impressed throughout. A minute mark on the knee of Liberty's left leg is mentioned for accuracy. It, and a light horizontal grease streak in the gown to the right (facing) of Liberty's left calf, can be used as pedigree markers. The vertical die break that sometimes is seen extending through the eagle's beak does not occur on this coin.
As of September 2005, the certified population of the 1931 drops from 33 specimens in MS65 to only 11 pieces in MS66. Considering that some of these are likely resubmissions, the rarity of this issue at the Premium Gem level is obvious. It is noteworthy that, according to our records, only two coins graded MS66 have appeared at auction over the past few years. Population: 7 in 66, 1 finer (9/05).
From The Phillip H.
