The original mintage of 2,938,250 pieces was apparently almost obliterated by the gold recall of 1933. Experts have speculated over the years which of these later dated issues is now the rarest, and exactly how they should be ranked. The population figures by the major services can sometimes be misleading as to exact rarity, as the same coin may have been submitted to both services at different times, or even the same service multiple times thus causing the published figures to be inflated. As a Gem, however, it seems clear that the 1931 falls into the lower echelon of these rarities.<BR>The splendidly original Gem offered here is the nicest 1931 we have offered since a similarly certified piece realized $30,475 in our 2000 Central States Sale. Soft frosted, original luster is evident over both sides and only a few modest luster grazes are visible here and there, most either in the fields or buried within the eagle's feathers. Hints of olive patina are noticed at the borders. An important opportunity for the serious collector of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles. Population: 25 in 65, 5 finer (10/03). </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/07/2004</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$49,450.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>05/05/2000</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$30,475.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/08/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$41,630.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>02/16/2000</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$31,625.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/01/1990</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$77,000.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>02/01/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$44,850.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>05/01/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$32,775.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>05/01/1990</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$75,350.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>05/01/1996</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$40,700.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. </span></font></tr></table></td></tr></table>
