1931 $20 MS65 PCGS. Since it was struck only two years before the gold recall and is almost exclusively found in Mint State, it is obvious that the 1931 Saint-Gaudens double eagle was never released for general circulation. Most of the 2,938,250 pieces originally struck were melted in the Mint and today the '31 has been reduced to such modest numbers that it is comparable in overall rarity to the highly respected 1932. Gem or better survivors probably number fewer than three dozen coins, allowing for a moderate number of resubmissions at the grading services.
The desirable Gem offered here not only boasts wonderful eye appeal, but it is an equally well preserved example whose surfaces show smooth champagne-gold color and frosty texture. The reverse is free of the die crack that bisects the eagle's beak on many 1931 double eagles and there are no bothersome post-production distractions. High-end quality for the assigned grade and a definite find for the discriminating gold specialist. Population: 25 in 65, 10 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
