Bakelite was a varnish substitute invented by Dr. Leo Baekeland, a Belgian-born immigrant, in 1907. Its chemical name is oxybenzylmethyle- neglycolanhydride. Bakelite was originally invented as an insulator varnish for radio transistors and electrical parts. The moment of its creation (much like the vulcanizing of rubber) is said to be accidental. Through the reaction of phenol and formaldehyde under heat and pressure, Bakelite was born. Patented in 1909, Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic polymers. As a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin polyoxybenzylmethyl- englycolanhydride, it became one of the most versatile plastics of the time.

Bakelite had advantages over other early plastics. It did not conduct electricity, was waterproof, resisted breakage and melting (unlike Celluloid), and was amenable for shaping into a variety of goods. Initially, Bakelite was dark in color. As its process was refined and additives (such as wood flour as a filler), Bakelite became more sturdy. As time went on, other refinements produced a rainbow of colors, which we see today in jewelry, buckles, dress clips, and buttons, as well as other accessories. Early Bakelite was used for the Kodak Brownie camera.

Coco Chanel and other designers of the 1930s used Bakelite accessories, which brought Bakelite to public awareness. True to his retro nature, Andy Warhol collected Bakelite, which continued its prominence in artistic circles and promoted interest in retro items and Bakelite.
