1930-S<$20> MS66 PCGS. When closely examining this rare double eagle, and comparing the often-seen die characteristics previously listed, this piece does not show the horizontal die scratch on the obverse, however, the die lump is easily visible to the viewer's naked eye inside the 0 of the date.
As an MS66, the 1930-S is an extremely rare coin with just two other pieces having been so graded by PCGS (9/05). One MS66 has also been graded at NGC. Of all the rarities in the landmark Phillip Morris Sale, the '30-S has a special charm quite unlike any of the other coins. In addition to the remarkably clean surfaces over each side, this piece displays a warm reddish glow at the centers with mildly contrasting pale mint-green color toward the margins. Fully frosted, we must once again comment on the extraordinarily clean surfaces of this coin. For future pedigree purposes, one small, horizontal planchet void is seen near the rear of the eagle's upper left wing feather. Of the highest order of rarity, this piece will be certain to generate much interest at lot viewing and the price it finally fetches at the auction could surprise many.
From The Phillip H.
