<B>1930-S $10 MS65 PCGS.</B></I> The mintage of the 1930-S ten was sufficient that one would think it would be more available than it actually is. But this issue repeats the familiar pattern in the Saint-Gaudens' designed ten and twenty dollar series of relatively high mintage and low availability. This, of course, is because of the widespread meltings from the 1930s. This was so extensive that today probably no more than 125-140 pieces are known in all grades. As further proof of the melting of this issue, a glance at the population figures from PCGS and NGC shows that no more than a handful of coins are lightly circulated, thus this issue was probably never released into the channels of commerce. With most of the known 1930-S tens in Uncirculated grades, this absolute rarity then becomes a condition rarity also. Only 27 pieces have been certified as MS65 by PCGS and NGC, with five in MS66, and three in MS67.<BR> The existence and possible existence of hoards is always an interesting topic of discussion in the ten and twenty dollar series. One of the most intriguing bits of speculation in Breen's <I>Encyclopedia</B></I> involves a story about the 1930-S ten: "For some decades, one 1930-S turned up in the San Francisco area every three years, probably from a single roll." If Breen's speculation was correct, by now the original supply would be exhausted.<BR> This is a memorable example that has rich, frosted mint luster with an even layer of reddish-golden patina. With magnification, one can see slight traces of lilac over the highpoints.
