1930-S $10 MS64 PCGS. This issue is recognized as one of the important rarities in the Indian Head eagle series from a mintage that was limited to just 96,000 coins, the ninth lowest of the entire series including the Periods varieties of 1907. A few years earlier in 1926, the Philadelphia Mint struck over 1 million eagles, fulfilling the needs in commerce for the remainder of that decade. Only three more issues would follow, including this date and the 1932 and 1933 eagles. While a few hundred examples of the '30-S eagle survive in all grades, this issue is indeed a rarity in Choice and Gem quality. It was apparently not actually released into circulation, thus all known examples are in Mint State grades, and they survive due to the activities of coin collectors at the time, who obtained examples from local banks in their area, or from coin dealers who bought quantities of the date for sale to collectors. The balance of the original mintage was melted after the 1933 gold recall. We believe that 200 to 300 coins is a reasonable estimate of the survivorship. Some other dates actually have a smaller number of surviving Mint State coins, but almost every other instance has an additional quantity of circulated pieces that are available to collectors today.
This near-Gem specimen is an appealing piece with fully brilliant and frosty yellow-gold color. A few small blemishes are evident on each side, the most noticeable being a small mark on Liberty's jaw. A small copper toning spot is visible near star 12 and a couple minute bagmarks can be seen in the reverse field. The overall strike is not full, but the design elements on each side are quite sharp. Population: 41 in 64, 19 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
