1930-50s Hand Carved Trout & Pike Fishing Decoys
Featured in this lot are these two hand carved wood fishing decoys circa 1930s-50s mimicking a Rainbow Trout and a Northern Pike. Fish spearing decoys were primarily used when ice fishing with spears, but were also used in normal fishing to attract fish to already placed baited lines. These decoys show a wood construction for the body and and metal constructed fins. The first decoy is a Northern Pike and shows colors of black, grey and beige in a polka dot pattern on the sides of the decoy. The eyes have been constructed out of small metal tacks. The bottom of the decoy has been carved out, filled with lead and covered with wood to keep the decoy upright and stable in the water. On the top of the decoy, above the gills are two metal loops for threading fishing line through. The decoy shows good condition with some fading and wear to the paint and rusting to the metal components but is still in good working and display condition. The decoy measures 8 1/2" L x 2 1/4" W x 1 3/4" H. The second in this collection is a Rainbow Trout decoy showing colors of red, black, brown, tan and navy blue. The back of the decoy shows a red base color with black polka dots. The belly of the decoy shows the tan base color. The eyes are constructed of large metal tacks and the fins are constructed with metal components. On the top of the decoy above the gills is a small metal loop for threading fishing line through. The bottom has been carved out, filled with lead and covered with wood again to keep the decoy upright and stable in the water. The decoy shows good condition with some slight wear and fading the the paint but is still in good working or display condition. The decoy measures 7 1/8" L x 2 3/16" W x 1 3/4" H.
