1929-S 50C MS66 PCGS. The onset of the Great Depression this year probably explains why the 1929-D and 1929-S are the most plentiful Half Dollars from the 1920s in Mint State. In terms of total number of coins extant, the '29-S is rarer than the '29-D in grades above AU. This may come as a shock to some because the former issue has a higher mintage of 1.9 million pieces (vs. 1 million coins for the 1929-D). It may also come as a surprise to collectors to learn that the 1929-S is the better struck of the two issues. Indeed, this high end Gem is sharply struck throughout with especially praiseworthy definition on the obverse over Liberty's head and on the reverse over the eagle's breast feathers. The luster is full, richly frosted, and accented in freckled copper-russet patina. There is not a single bothersome abrasion to report.
