1929 Philadelphia Athletics Presentational Award. While there surely once was a similar prize in the personal collections of Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane and Lefty Grove, this mysterious sculpted sphere is the first such specimen we have ever encountered in the hobby. It comes to us from the family of Sammy Hale, who took third sacker duties that World Championship season and is also responsible for the amazing signed panoramic photograph of the '29 Athletics that appears in this auction as well. We use the word "mysterious" to describe this piece as the composition of the piece is tough to discern--it appears to be some sort of polished, iridescent stone, but it may even have a metallic content. Perhaps it is obsidian. Regardless, this weighty round ball has been crafted to the size and look of a baseball, with the team logo "A" and block lettered "S. Hale" adorning one of the panels. A small divot appears just to the left, and a hairline crack forms an equator around the ball but does not appear to threaten structural integrity. Even advanced Philadelphia Athletics collectors are likely to find themselves encountering this piece for the very first time.
