A fully brilliant and highly lustrous yellow-gold example of the terminal date in the U.S. half eagle series, 1795-1929. A few light obverse marks keep this specimen from a far finer grade, but the in-hand appearance is still superb. Despite its listed mintage of 662,000 pieces, the 1929 is the key to the denomination among 20th-century half eagles; indeed, you need to go back to the 1870s to find a half eagle of comparable rarity and value. Relatively few pieces from that lofty mintage were ever released in Depression-era America which accounts for the great rarity today. As a for instance, the first Red Book column for the type is the VF-20 list; this date’s listed value is $18,500, and it only goes up from there. Only 15 “+” designated examples of the date have been certified by PCGS, the finest of those called MS-64+. Do not let this one escape – its quality is well above-average, the eye appeal is impressive, and it could be some time before a comparable specimen is available in the numismatic marketplace.
