1929-31 Casey Stengel Toledo Mudhens Contract & Addendums from the Casey Stengel Collection. "Say, I've got a tip on the market for you fellows," Casey is quoted as telling his 1929 Toledo Mudhens team, "buy Pennsylvania Railroad because by tomorrow night about a dozen of you bums will be riding on it." Though clearly not as prestigious as his job as skipper of the Yankees, the days with the Mudhens are noteworthy as the Hall of Famers' first taste of team leadership. Here we offer his 1931 Uniform Player's Contract for the Double-A squad, which pays Stengel $10,000 for the season. It is signed at the close by two team officials and by "Charles D. Stengel, Mgr." Stengel then writes his home address in Glendale below. Also here are addendums for 1929 and 1930, signed by the team's acting president, though not by Stengel, stipulating that Stengel may leave at the close of the season if he wishes, and that he is entitled to a bonus should the team have a success financial year. All three documents remain in terrific condition, with just some light, expected edge wear for paper artifacts of this vintage. LOA from PSA/DNA.
