1929 $5 MS64 PCGS. The final-year 1929 is a generally well struck issue, and the present coin is no exception. Save for a few of the feathers at the bottom of the Indian's headdress, which are still appreciably bold, all features are razor sharp in definition. The color is simply gorgeous, both sides displaying rich reddish-gold shadings over fully lustrous, satin textured features. There are a couple of inconsequential bagmarks that one would need a loupe to see, otherwise this coin would be a Gem. This issue, of which 662,000 pieces were originally produced, was not released in significant quantity prior to President Franklin Roosevelt's decision to halt distribution of gold coinage. Those coins that remained in federal hands, which constituted the vast majority of the original mintage, were melted. The survivors are virtually all AU or Mint State, and we suspect that most were obtained directly from the Mint, or, at least, from original bank-wrapped rolls. In terms of total number of coins known, the 1929 is the rarest Indian Half Eagle, but, due to the aforementioned grade distribution of the extant examples, it is not the rarest in high grade. Nevertheless, a Gem 1929 Indian Half Eagle is a truly rare coin, and near-Gems are only slightly less scarce. It seems likely that the certified population of this date in MS64 is somewhat inflated due to collectors' desires to obtain full Gem grades by submitting the same coins over and over again. As a result, one should take such data with a grain of salt when determining the true rarity of this lovely and important near-Gem.
