1929 $20 MS66 PCGS. A Premium Gem with exceptional eye
1929<$20> MS66 PCGS. A Premium Gem with exceptional eye appeal, this double eagle is tied for the finest PCGS has ever certified. Despite a mintage approaching 2 million coins, this date is a rarity as most were melted. The actual rarity has changed in recent years, as noted by Dave Bowers in the Guide Book of Double Eagles: "A very scarce issue that a few years ago was considered to be a major rarity. However, many hundreds of coins now have sneaked into the market, without fanfare, and now nearly 1,000 [sic] have been certified [281 by PCGS and NGC as of 7/06]--and, of course, many coins have not been. For the first time in modern numismatic history the 1929 is readily available and somewhat affordable (but hardly inexpensive). Now, many collections will end with the 1929 date instead of 1928 as formerly."
While this date is not quite as plentiful as suggested by Bowers, it is clearly more easily located today than at any time in the past. However, Gem quality examples are equally elusive today. This sharp example is struck in fully brilliant and highly lustrous yellow-gold with frosty surfaces. A few scattered marks and tiny spots are visible, consistent with the grade. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (7/06).
