1929 $20 MS65 PCGS. Nearly 1.8 million double eagles were coined in 1929, all at the Philadelphia Mint. All issues from this date on are great rarities, with the 1929 being most obtainable with respect to overall availability. Gold specialist David Akers (1998) writes: "...Of the final five collectible issues of the Saint-Gaudens series, the 1929 is, by a substantial margin, the most 'common' in terms of population rarity since specimens below Gem quality can be obtained with only moderate difficulty. This is especially true in the past few years since a number of newly discovered specimens have recently come onto the market, some of which are quite nice, grading Choice and Very Choice Uncirculated. However, true Gems of this issue ...are still very rare, if not extremely rare, at least on a par with the more highly regarded 1931 and 1932."
Estimates of 1929 survivors range from 60 examples, that Breen (1988) calls "reasonable," to a few hundred, which he says is "most likely too high." David Bowers (2004) suggests that up to 1,750 pieces are extant. The latter estimate is not in line with current population statistics, that reveal fewer than 300 certified examples. It does not seem likely that a sizeable quantity of an expensive coin such as the 1929 twenty dollar could exist without a substantial number being certified.
The 1929 Gem in this lot displays vibrant luster with peach-gold patina and a few splashes of slightly deeper orange color. A powerful strike emboldens the design elements, that exhibit crisp delineation on the Capitol building, on Liberty's face, fingers, and toes, on the olive branch, and on the eagle's feathers. Both sides are remarkably well preserved and clean, much more so than what might be expected for the grade level. A small linear mark just preceding the left wing to the left of the first T in TWENTY helps to pedigree the coin. Population: 19 in 65, 5 finer (11/06).
From The Kutasi Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
