1929 $20 MS65 PCGS. After a series of common Philadelphia Mint issues from 1922 through 1928, the 1929 double eagle begins a final string of rare dates through the end of the series in 1933. These pieces are not rare due to limited mintage (1,779,750 struck in 1929), but rather due to limited distribution. Nearly every piece coined in 1929 and later years was stored in Mint or Treasury vaults until they could be melted after the 1933 gold elimination act.
Two small hoards account for many of the pieces that are on the market today. A group of 40 pieces was discovered in the 1980s in England, while a smaller accumulation of 10 pieces appeared in the early 1990s. For this date, either one of these can be considered a significant event. It is not known how many examples of this date still survive, although estimates range from a low of 60 pieces a figure the Breen called reasonable to a high of nearly 1,800 pieces per Bowers. This latter figure seems substantially high. Perhaps the actual number of coins that survive today is in the range of 200 pieces.
This gorgeous Gem, which approaches finest certified honors, is sharply defined with highly lustrous and frosty yellow-gold surfaces. Splashes of honey-gold color on each side add to its eye appeal. There are no abrasions that represent any concern on either side of this Gem Population: 20 in 65, 5 finer (12/06).
From The Matt & Susan Brown Family Collection of Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
