1929 $20 MS64 PCGS. This is the beginning of the end in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. Coinage of these pieces concluded with six dates that were high mintage issues, but now are quite rare. Obviously few of these coins were actually distributed, and most remained in Mint or Treasury storage until they were eventually melted several years later. The 1929 is typical of all these dates, with a mintage of nearly 2 million pieces, but only a few hundred remain. The majority of these pieces are in low Mint State grades, and this near-Gem specimen is actually nicer than most. There is no indication that any of these coins actually entered circulation. Aside from a single hoard of 40 pieces and the possibility of a few smaller groups that remained together for years, most or all survivors are probably coins that were acquired directly by collectors at the time of issue.
Both sides are highly lustrous with frosty yellow-gold surfaces that exhibit only a few slight bagmarks or blemishes. Traces of subtle pink and green color are evident on each side. The strike is sharp with nearly full design detail throughout. This is a piece that should please the astute, patient collector who has been waiting for just such an opportunity. Unlike certain other gold rarities, the 1929 double eagles are rarely offered in any grade, and when pieces do make an appearance, competition is strong.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
