1929<$20> MS64 PCGS. The 1929 initiates the end-of-the-series rarities in the Saint-Gaudens series. While not quite as elusive as the well-known 1930s issues, the correlation of the stock market crash and the beginning of the Great Depression make it a favorite of gold collectors. Like many late-date issues in the series, the substantial mintage of the 1929 (over 1.7 million pieces) is rendered meaningless by extensive melting in the following decade. Perhaps fewer than 300 pieces remain today, almost exclusively in Mint State grades.
The strong eye appeal displayed by this Choice example is a trademark of the challenging 1929 Saint-Gaudens. Both sides exhibit bountiful luster and strong highpoint definition, with a slight gleam of reddish patina throughout. Only a few incidental abrasions are noticed on the obverse, most within or just above the sun's rays on either side of the portrait. Modest marks widely dispersed over the eagle's wings are of relatively little distraction. All in all, a significant find for the discriminating Double Eagle specialist.
