1929 $20 MS64 PCGS. After several common date Philadelphia Mint double eagles were issued through 1928, mintages continued at substantial levels in 1929 and beyond. However, beginning in 1929 these pieces were not widely distributed, but rather, were stored in Treasury vaults awaiting their fate in the government melting pots of the mid and late 1930s. In their recently published Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth wrote: "Beginning with the 1929 double eagle and continuing through the 1933 issue, any collector who undertakes obtaining these issues does so with extreme care and financial fortitude."
The existing population of these pieces today survives from those few coins obtained by contemporary collectors, or from a small additional number of pieces that have been found in Europe. One small hoard discovered in England in 1984 consisted of 40 coins, and a mini-hoard of 10 pieces was located by Jeff Garrett in the early 1990s. No other substantial quantities of this date have been found, to the best of our knowledge.
Nearly all surviving examples grade MS60 or finer, with only a few AU coins that have been certified. Population totals in all grades include 121 coins certified by NGC and 162 by PCGS, although Dave Bowers commented that "nearly 1,000 have been certified" in A Guide Book of Double Eagle Gold Coins. We disagree with his comment that this issue is now "readily available and somewhat affordable."
This Choice Mint State example has nice design definition throughout, with brilliant yellow-gold surfaces and minimal abrasions. Both sides exhibit frosty mint luster. Faint traces of pinkish toning add to the overall aesthetic appeal of this lovely double eagle. Population: 79 in 64, 25 finer (12/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
