1929<$20> MS64 PCGS. Bright and lustrous with a peripheral ring of greenish-gold luster through the stars, and a typical strong strike on the devices. A loupe will locate some minor ticks from handling, but none are deep or distracting. This particular coin is identifiable by a very trivial copper speck touching the rim and located left of the U in UNITED above the eagle's beak. About as nice as this date can readily be located, with the PCGS Population Report noting 84 pieces seen this high, with just 21 coins graded higher of this date.
As with so many Saint-Gaudens double eagles, the 1929 issue suffered mightily from the massive meltings of gold coinage in the 1930s. The year 1929 started off rather well, the American economy seemed to be recovering from a sharp downturn in farm prices and had started to work off the excesses from the Florida land boom of the mid to late 1920s. The stock market provided a wild ride for investors, but seemed to recover until October, 1929 when the bottom fell out of the economy and stocks prices. Sales of goods plummeted and the days of easy credit ground to an abrupt halt. The demand for double eagles fell from the prior years, and coinage numbers began to decline. Most of the new 1929 double eagles sat in bank vaults or remained with the Treasury. Today we know that America fell into a deep depression which bottomed out in 1932, and the recovery was still many years away. No doubt most of the coins put away at the time of issue ended up being spent for living expenses in the 1930s or were turned in as generally required by the good citizens of America in 1934. Today the number of 1929 double eagles extant is likely several hundred coins with approximately 250 of those certified, virtually all in uncirculated condition. For many years the 1929 double eagle was quite elusive and one of the great rarities of this series, but over the last few decades a number have turned up from various sources, and while this date still commands a healthy price, it is more available to date collectors. This regal coin would make a welcome addition to even the most advanced collection.

Importan
