1928 Hawaiian 50C PCGS MS64
1928 Hawaiian Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. A nice white coin. Well struck and attractive. A very popular commemorative half dollar whose low mintage recommends it to the Commemorative half dollar collector. Hawaii, which became the 50th state in the union in 1959, was originally a widely dispersed set of islands way out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean peopled by a noble race of Polynesians. At the time Cook sighted the islands in 1778, various kings ruled over the different islands. His ship landed at what is today called the Big Island, where several "nobles" (a.k.a. savvy politicians) ruled the place. Cook pow-wowed with the most important high chiefs, traded for food stores, and set sail on his voyage of discovery. He returned in 1779 where he was killed in an incident with the locals. This commemorative half dollar commemorates Captain James Cook as the discoverer of Hawaii. (Ignore the fact that the polynesians discovered the place nearly a thousand years before Cook's arrival!) (PCGS # 9309) .
Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,300.
