Presented in this lot is an original 1928 Great Northern Railway calendar topper portrait by Winold Reiss, "Mike Oka Blood Indian Brave Waterton Lakes National Park See America First" The portrait title figure, Mike Oka, was a Blackfoot Indian elder of the Blood Reserve in Canada, a life-time councillor for the Blackfoot people. The Blood Tribe/Káínai is a part of the Blackfoot Confederacy, one of three nations comprising the Blackfoot Confederacy, and is based in Southern Alberta, Canada on 557.2 square miles of reserve land bordered by the Old Man River, the St. Mary River, and the Belly River. Similar paintings by Reiss became known more widely beginning in the 1920 and to the 1950s, when the Great Northern Railway commissioned Reiss to do paintings of the Blackfeet which were then distributed widely as lithographed reproductions on Great Northern calendars. In 1931, and 1934-37, Reiss organized a summer art school, also referred to as an artists' colony near Glacier National Park. This calendar features the iconic ledger art imagery on left and right borders. Empire Builder Oriental Limited operated between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest via Glacier National Park, a route map is right below the portrait. The Empire Builder was the flagship passenger train of the Great Northern Railway (1889-1970), originally operating a steam powered service that was re-equipped in 1947 to a streamliner service. F. Winold Reiss was a German-born American artist and graphic designer. In 1920 he went West for the first time, working for months on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, painting 36 portraits of tribal members. Over the years Reiss painted more than 250 works depicting Native Americans. This calendar topper is in very nice condition, mounted on a blue matting, slight scuffing noted to edges. No obvious marring noted, visible art measures 10"W x 12"L, matting measures 13.25"W x 16"L
