As with many branch mint deliveries in the Buffalo Nickel series, it is the strike that limits the grade of many otherwise desirable Uncirculated 1928-D examples. Lange (2000) states that most survivors of this issue display "mediocre" striking detail, and the plate coin in the second edition of the book The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels is no exception. The Gem that we are offering in this lot, however, is exceptional for the issue, and it is one of the sharpest '28-D Nickels that this cataloger has handled. Save for trivial softness of detail over and around the bison's shoulder and the Indian's hair above the knot, the devices are pleasingly full. Sprays of delicate lilac-silver and orange-gold iridescence compete for dominance over intensely lustrous, frosty textured surfaces. Devoid of grade-limiting blemishes, or essentially so, this coin is solidly graded as a premium quality Gem. NGC and PCGS combined report just 16 examples in MS66, and there are none finer (10/02).From the BTB Collection of Buffalo Nickels.
